Pattern is a device I use to add surreal or symbolic elements to my compositions. Each shape is a cypher: a word in a secret code waiting to be cracked.
The three females shown have appeared before, as has the leopard dot pattern (blown-up medieval woodcuts of trees). Stripes and splashes evoke dazzle ship camouflage.
