Computer algorithms deployed by Social Media platforms (e.g. Instagram, Facebook) are used to discern what is acceptable for public viewing, yet has resulted in some farcical definitions of taboo. Examples of subject matter that has led to Juliet’s images being banned includes abstract circles, light coloured clothing, plant leaves and seagulls.
The artistic nude is classed as acceptable unless presented in the context of implying sexual activity, yet paintings of all types of nudes are continually being shadow banned (hidden from public view) and artist accounts are often frozen.
Juliet embarked on a mission to beat the algorithms (nick-named “censor bots”) at their own game, to blur the boundaries between figurative representations of nudity, implied nudity and abstract art.
