In 2022 Juliet began re-working paintings that had previously been ear-marked as Not Safe For Work, incorporating elements designed to obscure and censor the body whilst, paradoxically, drawing more attention to it.
She painted coloured circles (“dots of doom”) over genitalia, made a camouflage of blown-up wood-cut prints, added geometric stripes and random shapes reminiscent of World War I dazzle ships and isolated sections of her compositions with reversed negative effect blocks of colours.
Juliet’s experiments to overcome the shadow ban aim to ensure her work remains visible to all art lovers. She encourages the viewer to look twice and challenge whether images are acceptable or not.
The results have been mixed: some images depicting full nudity have escaped the censors, particularly when removed from the context of figurative art. Other images continue to be censored, with a bias towards the female nude (particularly the nipple) being regarded as unacceptable for 21st Century eyes.
